Lesson 5

💭 Think About...

What makes a power-up special in video games and how could we make that happen in real life?
How will other kids know what your power-up does just by looking at it?
What would happen if someone used your power-up at the beginning of an obstacle course versus at the end?
Why is it important to test your power-up station before other kids try it?
What's the most exciting power-up you can imagine, and how would it help someone in an obstacle course?

🔨 Your Project

**The Challenge:** Create your own Super Mario power-up station that gives players special abilities!

**Your Mission:** Work with your partner to build a power-up station with three important parts:

  1. A way for players to "collect" the power-up
  2. A clear sign showing what the power-up does
  3. A way for players to use their new power

**Step-by-Step:**

  1. Look at your power-up idea card with your partner and talk about what you want to create
  2. Draw your idea on paper first - what will it look like? How will it work?
  3. Use your materials to build your power-up station (boxes, cups, paper, tape, and more!)
  4. Make a clear sign so players know what your power-up does
  5. Test your station - does it work the way you planned?
  6. Make any changes needed to make it even better!

**Power-Up Ideas to Get You Started:**

- Super Jump (helps you jump higher!)

- Speed Boost (makes you move faster!)

- Shield Protection (keeps you safe!)

- Extra Points (gives you bonus points!)

- Super Strength (makes you stronger!)

**The Test:** Can another kid look at your power-up station and immediately know what to do? Does your power-up make the obstacle course more fun and exciting? If yes, you've succeeded as a Super Mario designer!
