Lesson 1

💭 Think About...

What makes a Super Mario level fun and exciting to play?
How could we turn video game obstacles like pipes and blocks into real obstacle course challenges?
If you could be any Super Mario character going through an obstacle course, who would you pick and why?
What's the difference between an obstacle that's challenging and one that's impossible?
How do power-ups in Mario games help players, and what could be our real-life power-ups?

🔨 Your Project

**Challenge: Design Your First Super Mario Level!**

You and your partner are going to create an amazing Super Mario obstacle course level on paper! This is how real game designers start - with ideas and sketches before building anything.

**Your Mission:**

Draw a complete Super Mario level that other students will want to play!

**What Your Level Must Have:**

  1. **Start and Finish Line** - Where does Mario begin? Where does he win?
  2. **3 Different Obstacles** - Things to jump over, crawl under, or climb around
  3. **2 Power-ups** - Special items that help Mario (like making him bigger or faster)
  4. **1 Enemy** - Something Mario has to avoid or defeat
  5. **A Cool Level Name** - What will you call your creation?

**Step by Step:**

  1. Get your large paper and drawing materials
  2. Work with your partner to sketch your level from left to right
  3. Start with your start line on the left side
  4. Add your obstacles, power-ups, and enemy across the middle
  5. End with your finish line (maybe a flag!) on the right
  6. Label everything so others know what each part is
  7. Give your level an awesome name and write it at the top

**The Test:**

Could another student look at your drawing and understand how to play your level? Would they think it looks fun and challenging but not impossible?

**Bonus Challenge:**

Think about how we'll build this with real materials like boxes, cones, and hula hoops. Can you add notes about what materials you'll need?
