Lesson 5

💭 Think About...

What happens when Mario gets a power-up in video games, and how does it change what he can do?
What makes a good challenge - should it be super easy, impossible, or somewhere in between?
How will other students know if they successfully completed your power-up challenge?
What's the difference between a power-up that makes you stronger versus one that makes you faster?
If you could design any magical power-up for real life, what would it do and how would someone earn it?

🔨 Your Project

**Your Mission: Become a Power-Up Engineer!**

Today you're going to design and build your very own interactive power-up station that other students can use in obstacle courses!

**What You're Building:**

A special station where students do a challenge, and if they succeed, they earn a cool power-up ability!

**Step 1: Plan Your Power-Up (10 minutes)**

- Draw your power-up station on paper

- Decide what challenge players must complete (toss a ball, knock down cups, stack something, etc.)

- Choose what power-up they earn if they succeed (Super Speed = hop like a bunny, Invincibility = crawl like a turtle, Extra Strength = do jumping jacks, etc.)

- Make sure other kids will understand how to use your station

**Step 2: Build Your Station (20 minutes)**

- Use boxes, cups, balls, paper, and tape to build your design

- Test it yourself first - does it work the way you planned?

- Make it sturdy enough for other students to use

- Ask for help if you need it - teamwork makes everything better!

**Step 3: Test With Friends (10 minutes)**

- Let classmates try your power-up station

- Watch how they use it - does anything need to be fixed?

- Try other students' stations and give them friendly feedback

**The Test:**

Your power-up station is successful if:

- Other students can figure out how to use it

- It gives them a fun challenge that's not too easy or too hard

- The power-up reward is clear and exciting

- It works smoothly when multiple people try it
