Reading Comprehension and Card Abilities

💭 Think About...

1. What kinds of games have you played that have cards with special abilities? What are some examples of card abilities you've seen before?
2. Why is it important to read and understand a card's ability? What could happen in a game if you misunderstand what a card does?
3. When you encounter an unfamiliar word on a card, what strategies could you use to figure out its meaning?
4. Game card abilities have to be written very clearly and concisely. Why do you think this is? How is this different from other types of writing?
5. If you could create any card ability, what would it be? What would it do in a game? How would you word it so others could easily understand?

🔨 Your Project

  1. Look closely at the first sample card. Read the card name and the text that describes its ability or effect.
  2. In your own words, write 1-2 sentences explaining what this card's ability does. Be as clear and specific as you can.
  3. Repeat steps 1-2 for the remaining sample cards.
  4. Select 2 cards from the samples. Imagine these cards are part of the same game. How could you use their abilities together? Write 2-3 sentences describing a combo or interaction between the cards.
  5. Now it's time to create your own card! Use the template to design a card. Include:

- A name for your card

- The type of card (creature, spell, enchantment, etc.)

- A unique ability or effect

- Flavor text (optional)

  1. Write your card's ability using clear, concise text. Imagine you're explaining the ability to a friend who has never seen the card before. Make sure to specify any costs, timing, or targets.
  2. Trade cards with a classmate. Read each other's card abilities carefully. Provide feedback on whether the ability text is clear and easy to understand.
  3. Revise your card ability based on the feedback you received. Make sure the final text follows the template and is free of errors.
