Wand Making Workshop

💭 Think About...

1. If you could have a magic wand, what would you use it for? What kinds of spells would you cast?
2. In stories like Harry Potter, wands choose their wizard. What kind of personality or qualities do you think a wand would look for in a wizard?
3. Many famous magic wands have names, like the Elder Wand or the Wand of Destiny. What would you name your wand and why?
4. Wands are often made with a magical core, like a unicorn hair or dragon heartstring. What kind of magical core would you put in your wand? What powers would it have?
5. If you were a wand maker, what materials would you use to make your wands? What would your wand shop look like?

🔨 Your Project

Here are the updated step-by-step project instructions for the K-5 Wand Making Workshop:

Wand Making Workshop Instructions

  1. Gather your materials:

- Wooden dowel rod

- Acrylic paints in various colors

- Paintbrush

- Cup of water

- Paper towels

- Ribbons, glitter glue, stickers or other decorations (optional)

- Newspaper or tablecloth to protect your work surface

Ask an adult to help you collect everything you need.

  1. Cover your work area with newspaper or a tablecloth. This will keep paint off the table.
  2. Pour a small amount of each paint color you want to use onto a paper plate or palette. You only need a little bit of paint.
  3. Dip your paintbrush in the water, then gently tap off the excess. Dip just the tip of the brush into the first color you want to use.
  4. Begin painting your wooden dowel rod. You can paint it all one color or create patterns and designs. Be creative! If the paint looks globby or uneven, dip your brush in the water again, tap it off, and keep painting. The paint should go on smoothly.
  5. Rinse your brush in the water before switching to a new color. Tap the excess water off on a paper towel so the brush is damp but not dripping wet. This will help keep your colors bright and prevent them from getting muddy.
  6. Continue painting until you are happy with how your wand looks. If you make a mistake, wait for that part to dry, then paint over it.
  7. Set your wand aside to dry completely. Acrylic paint usually dries in about 10-15 minutes. Wash your paintbrush with soap and water while you wait.
  8. Once the paint is totally dry, you can add decorations like ribbons or glitter glue if you want to. Tie short pieces of ribbon near the base of the wand. Add dots or lines of glitter glue. Get creative and have fun, but let an adult help with anything involving scissors.
  9. Allow any glue to dry completely before using your wand. This may take a couple hours. Once it's dry, wave it around and cast some magical spells!

Tips:

- If your paint is too thick, add a tiny bit of water to thin it out. If it's too runny, wait a minute to let it dry slightly before painting more.

- Rinse your brush often to keep the colors clean and bright. Wipe it gently on a paper towel so it's not too wet.

- More thin layers of paint look better than one thick, globby layer. Be patient and add multiple coats if needed.

- Let each layer dry before adding more paint or decorations on top to prevent smearing and smudging.

- Ask an adult for help any time you need it, especially when using scissors.

Have fun crafting your own one-of-a-kind, magical wand! Remember, there's no right or wrong way for it to look. Use your creativity and imagination!
