Quidditch Game Day

💭 Think About...

1. What do you know about Quidditch from reading Harry Potter or seeing the movies? What makes it different from sports in the non-magical world?
2. Quidditch requires teamwork between players with very different roles. What other activities can you think of where people have to work together despite having different jobs?
3. In what ways might playing Quidditch be challenging without using magic? How will we need to adapt the game to play it ourselves?
4. The four Hogwarts houses compete against each other in Quidditch. How do you think they show good sportsmanship even when they really want to win?
5. If you could have any position on a Quidditch team, which would you want to play and why? What skills do you have that would help you in that role?

🔨 Your Project

  1. Listen carefully as your teacher explains the rules and positions for our modified Quidditch game.
  2. When your teacher assigns you a position (Chaser, Beater, Keeper, or Seeker), put on your team's pinnie or armband.
  3. If you're a Chaser, your job is to work with your fellow Chasers to throw the Quaffle (ball) through the other team's hoops to score points. You can pass the Quaffle to your teammates.
  4. If you're a Keeper, guard your team's hoops and try to block the other team from scoring with the Quaffle.
  5. If you're a Beater, throw the Bludgers at the other team's Chasers to tag them out. If you're hit by a Bludger, freeze in place for 5 seconds before rejoining the game.
  6. If you're a Seeker, your only job is to catch the Golden Snitch (small ball) when the teacher releases it partway through the game. Stay out of the way until then. Catching the Snitch scores 150 points for your team and ends the game!
  7. No physical contact is allowed. Chasers can only move with the Quaffle by running, not dribbling. Beaters should throw Bludgers below the shoulders.
  8. Play fair and have fun! Cheer on your teammates and congratulate the other team on good plays. Remember, the most important thing is good sportsmanship, not just winning.
  9. When the game ends, return your pinnie/armband and gather with your class to reflect on the experience.
