Potion Making Experiments

💭 Think About...

1. What do you think of when you hear the word "potion"? What are some famous potions from books or movies?
2. Have you ever mixed things together and noticed a reaction? What happened? What do you think caused it?
3. If you could brew a magic potion, what powers would you want it to have? What ingredients might it contain?
4. Why do you think it's important for wizards (and scientists) to keep careful records of their experiments?
5. Do you think the ingredients in a potion matter, or is it the magic words that make it work? What about in real science?

🔨 Your Project

  1. Put on your safety goggles. Science can get messy!
  2. With your group, read the "Potion Recipe Cards" and gather your ingredients. If anything is missing, raise your hand and ask your teacher.
  3. Lay out your supplies and cover your work area with the plastic tablecloth. Make sure everyone has space to work.
  4. Follow the steps on the recipe card to create your first potion. Take turns measuring and pouring. Record your observations on the "Wizardly Observations" sheet.
  5. Repeat with the other recipes. Notice what's similar and what's different about each one.
  6. If something unexpected happens or you need help, let your teacher know. Don't taste anything!
  7. When you're done, carefully clean up your area and dispose of your potions as directed. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  8. With your group, discuss what you observed. What surprised you? What did the potions have in common? Record your ideas.
  9. If you have time, try out the "Is it an Acid or Base?" and "Design Your Own Potion" activities on the computer.
  10. Be ready to share your favorite part of the activity with the class!
