Designing with Slabs: Decorative Plates

💭 Think About...

1. Look closely at the patterns and designs on plates, bowls, and mugs in your home. How do you think those designs were made?
2. How do you think we can create a flat, smooth surface with clay for a plate?
3. If you could design a plate for a special occasion, what would it be? What colors and patterns would you use?
4. Imagine you are a chef plating food on a decorative plate. How does the plate's design interact with the food? What makes an appealing food presentation?
5. Ceramic plates can last a very long time, even thousands of years! If someone found your plate in the future, what would it tell them about you?

🔨 Your Project

  1. Sketch your slab plate design ideas on the planning sheet. Consider the size, shape, and patterns you want to include.
  2. Knead your ball of clay until it is soft and smooth, with no cracks or air bubbles.
  3. Dust your work surface lightly with flour. Place your clay on the placemat and roll it out to an even 1⁄4 inch thickness. Ask your teacher to check the thickness before moving on.
  4. Place the paper plate template on your slab and carefully cut around it with the plastic knife. Peel away the excess clay. The end result should a slab of clay in the shape of a circle.
  5. Imprint designs into your clay circle using texture mats or found objects. Press firmly for clear patterns. Experiment with different placements and combinations.
  6. Once you are happy with your design, carefully lift the clay circle and drape it over the upside-down paper plate. Gently shape it to the plate and trim any uneven edges.
  7. Dip the sponge in water and smooth the edges of your plate. Use the fork to scratch a decorative border pattern if desired.
  8. Write your initials or name on the back of the plate with a pencil or clay carving tool.
  9. Loosely cover your plate with plastic and allow it to dry slowly until leather-hard. Do not press the plastic directly against the clay.
  10. Once leather-hard, your teacher will help you remove the paper plate and complete the drying process.
