Tile by Tile: Creating Colorful Clay Mosaics

💭 Think About...

1. Have you ever seen a mosaic before? Where was it and what was it made out of?
2. Mosaics are made from small pieces arranged in patterns. Can you think of other art that uses patterns?
3. Clay tiles can be different shapes and sizes. How might the shape of the tiles affect the overall mosaic design?
4. If you could make a mosaic to decorate something, what would you make? A pot, picture frame, pathway?
5. Imagine you're an artisan making tiles hundreds of years ago. What would be the most challenging part of the process? What would you enjoy most?

🔨 Your Project

  1. Sketch your mosaic design on paper first. Keep it simple - geometric shapes work well.
  2. Roll out your clay slab to about 1/4 inch thick. Make sure it's even!
  3. Cut out tile shapes using clay tools, cookie cutters, or a knife. You'll need at least 15-20 tiles.
  4. Gently press textures into the tiles with tools or found objects if desired.
  5. Attach the small tile shapes onto your slab base by scoring each side and using slip.
  6. You will use the small pieces to create a pattern or image of your choice.
